Why Most LA Trips Use Van Nuys
Most of our Los Angeles flights run through Van Nuys Airport (VNY), one of the busiest general-aviation airports in the country and the private-aviation heart of the San Fernando Valley. Its main runway is around 8,001 feet, which handles the light, midsize, and super-midsize jets we charter most often, along with heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft. From the private terminals at VNY, you are close to the studios in Burbank and Studio City, the Westside, Beverly Hills, and the drive up the coast to Malibu. There is no commercial terminal to walk through; the car meets the aircraft, and the trip starts the way it should.
Hollywood Burbank Airport (legally Bob Hope Airport) is the other field we use most, minutes from the major studios and a practical choice for the entertainment and corporate traffic that defines this market. If Van Nuys is unavailable on the day, we may coordinate with the operator on an alternate such as Burbank, subject to scheduling and aircraft availability.
Honest About the Local Constraints
Van Nuys limits noisier jet departures overnight, roughly 10 PM to 7 AM, and asks operators to avoid late-night flying through its voluntary Quieter Nights program. The Valley is noise-sensitive, and quieter Stage 3 aircraft are the preferred way in and out during that window. If a late-night departure or an early-morning arrival is part of your itinerary, Hollywood Burbank is often the more practical option, since charter flights are not bound by its voluntary night curfew.
Southern California runs on its own calendar. Awards season, from January through March, is the busiest stretch of the year, and demand around it firms up well in advance. Coachella fills the Palm Springs airports in April, and the winter holidays and summer are steady leisure peaks. We plan around those windows so the aircraft you are quoted on is the aircraft on the day, as far as availability allows.
What “Vetted” Actually Means
We vet the operator and aircraft before we present quotes. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:
- FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
- Reviewing the operator’s subscription to the Wyvern and ARGUS systems, with reports available on request where the operator participates
- Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft, along with pilot currency on the specific aircraft type
