Pistons

Piston aircraft handle the shortest Los Angeles trips, the ones where a jet would spend more time taxiing than flying. Three to nine seats, cruise speeds from 180 to 243 knots, and the lowest hourly rates of anything on this site.

Typical Aircraft

The Beech Baron 58 is the standard twin, with double rear doors that make loading awkward items straightforward. The Cessna 340 is the only pressurized aircraft here and the fastest. The Piper Navajo family carries up to nine, the Piper Aztec takes rough fields without complaint, and the single-engine Cirrus SR22 carries three or four behind a whole-airframe parachute.

When Piston Aircraft Fit the Los Angeles Trip

Catalina Island, Santa Barbara, Camarillo, Oxnard, Chino, San Diego, Palm Springs and the high desert. The Catalina run is the defining trip: the island’s airport caps aircraft at 12,500 pounds, bars jets outright and operates in daylight only, so pistons and light turboprops are what actually serve it.

Vetting Behind Every Trip

Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:

  • FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
  • Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates; reports may be provided on request.
  • Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
  • Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.

Charter Pricing Reference

Across the 9 piston aircraft listed on this page, industry hourly rates run $800 to $1,800 per hour as of 7/2026. Each aircraft page carries its own rate. Actual quotes vary by operator, routing, positioning, and date.

Los Angeles Patterns We Plan Around

Awards season runs January through March and it is the single biggest pressure on Southern California charter availability. Van Nuys and Hollywood Burbank get picked over first, and a January request made in December is a very different market from the same request made on the day. Coachella in April does the same thing to Palm Springs. Van Nuys operates a jet noise curfew for louder aircraft between roughly 10pm and 7am, while Ontario runs 24 hours with no curfew, which is why so many late departures end up there.

Terrain is the thing to plan around. Leaving the Los Angeles basin in almost any direction except west means crossing high ground, and only the pressurized Cessna 340 can climb comfortably above it. The rest work around it at lower altitude, which on a warm afternoon means a bumpier trip.
