Israel Aircraft Industries improved the Westwind I with a new wing section and winglets, lifting cruise to 424 knots and range to 2,560 nautical miles. The cabin is unchanged at seven to ten seats with the same generous layout for the class. Why the Westwind II Fits Los Angeles
That 2,560-nautical-mile range is the longest in this category by a wide margin, and it changes what the aircraft can do from Los Angeles. Chicago and the Gulf Coast go nonstop with a working payload where the Westwind I would need to stop, and the Mexican resort coast stops being a range calculation at all.
For a group of eight or nine heading east out of Van Nuys, the Westwind II is regularly the cheapest aircraft that does it in one leg. That is a narrow but genuinely useful niche, and it is the reason the type survives on the charter market.
The winglets also help on warm-day departures out of the inland fields, where Ontario’s long runways and 24-hour operation make it the straightforward choice for a heavy fuel load.
