The Global 5500 is the re-engined, re-winged update of the 5000, and out of Los Angeles it closes most of the gap to the larger aircraft in this family. Thirteen to sixteen passengers, 5,900 nautical miles and a cabin brought up to current Bombardier standards.
Bombardier fitted the Global 5500 with new Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engines and a redesigned wing, lifting range and efficiency over the 5000 while keeping the fuselage length. Thirteen to sixteen seats, a cruise around Mach 0.85 and 5,900 nautical miles.

Why the Global 5500 Fits Los Angeles
Seven hundred nautical miles over the 5000 changes which Pacific and European city pairs work nonstop from Los Angeles with a genuine passenger load. That is the whole reason to pay the difference between the two aircraft.
The Pearl engines are quieter and more efficient than the BR710s on the 5000, and the cabin was updated alongside them. For a client comparing the two on a long crossing, the newer aircraft is a materially better place to spend twelve hours.
Fleet numbers are small because the aircraft is recent, so short-notice availability out of Southern California is less certain than for a Global 6000 or a Gulfstream G550. During awards season between January and March that gap is at its widest.
