Piaggio Avanti / II

The Piaggio Avanti is the fastest turboprop flying out of Los Angeles and the strangest-looking aircraft on this site. Its pusher propellers sit behind the cabin, which is why it cruises at 402 knots and why the cabin is quieter than the layout suggests.

Piaggio built the Avanti II with two rear-mounted Pratt and Whitney PT6A-66B engines driving pusher propellers, a forward wing and a main wing set behind the cabin. Seven to nine seats, 402 knots and 1,470 nautical miles of range. It is the only three-lifting-surface design in production charter. Every Piaggio Avanti we arrange flies with an operator certificated under FAR Part 135, the FAA rules for on-demand, for-hire charter.

Why the Piaggio Avanti Fits Los Angeles

At 402 knots the Avanti flies at light-jet speed on turboprop fuel burn, which on a Los Angeles to Bay Area or Los Angeles to Las Vegas, NV business day is a genuinely efficient answer. Very few aircraft let a client argue for the cheaper fuel bill without giving up the schedule.

The propellers being behind the cabin is not styling. It moves the noise aft, and passengers regularly comment that the Avanti is quieter in the seats than a conventional turboprop. For a two-hour working leg out of Van Nuys that matters.

The charter fleet is small compared with the King Air line, so short-notice availability in Southern California is less reliable. During awards season between January and March, an Avanti request usually needs more lead time than a King Air 200 does.

Vetting Behind Every Trip

Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:

  • FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
  • Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates; reports may be provided on request.
  • Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
  • Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.

Charter Pricing Reference

Industry hourly rates for the Piaggio Avanti run $2,200 to $3,200 per hour as of 7/2026. Actual quotes vary by operator, routing, positioning, and date.

The Avanti prices between the King Air 200 and the King Air 350, and on Los Angeles legs over an hour the speed usually makes it the cheaper trip rather than the dearer one.
